Kazakhstan Launches Digital Tracking System for Saiga Horns to Curb Illegal Trade

Kazakhstan has introduced a new national digital system to trace saiga antelope horns ahead of export, representing a significant advancement in wildlife monitoring and anti-poaching efforts.

The announcement, made during an international meeting in Abu Dhabi, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.

At the meeting, Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev met with Daudi Sumba, Chief Conservation Officer at WWF International. Their discussions focused on traceability, ongoing conservation initiatives, and enhancing international cooperation.

Kazakhstan’s delegation presented a state-of-the-art labeling system using DataMatrix (GS1) technology, which enables real-time tracking of each saiga horn and its derivatives from processing to export. The system aims to increase transparency, prevent illegal trade in wildlife products, and allow for independent auditing. Additionally, it mandates that only finished products are exportable - supporting domestic processing before export.

Officials stressed that the new system aligns with global conservation standards and strengthens law enforcement capabilities in wildlife protection.

The parties also reviewed Kazakhstan’s saiga population, now exceeding 5 million, and reflected on conservation measures implemented since 2003. Discussions covered habitat protection, species monitoring, and the value of international partnerships in preserving biodiversity.

Kazakhstan reaffirmed its determination to pursue sustainable wildlife management, strict product control, and full compliance with international conservation obligations.
