Kazakhstan Launches New Holiday Honoring National Dog Breeds

Kazakhstan is adding a new date to its national calendar-September 3 will be celebrated as the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet, recognizing two of the country’s most treasured dog breeds.

The decision follows a recent government resolution expanding the official list of public holidays, highlighting growing efforts to preserve Kazakhstan’s cultural and biological heritage, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The Kazakh Tazy and Kazakh Tobet are deeply rooted in the country’s history, known for their speed, endurance, guarding instincts, and intelligence.

A large-scale scientific study conducted in Kazakhstan recently confirmed the ancient origins and unique genetic makeup of both breeds. Researchers have already:

Created a national DNA database

Introduced genetic passports for dogs

Developed technologies to preserve their gene pool

So far, over 600 dogs have received genetic certification.

Global recognition and national pride

In 2024, the Tazy achieved international recognition from the Fédération Cynologique Internationale-a major milestone that strengthened efforts to protect and promote the breed globally.

Officials say the new holiday is more than symbolic. It reflects a broader strategy to safeguard Kazakhstan’s natural and cultural legacy, ensuring that these iconic breeds continue to thrive for generations to come.

With science, tradition, and national pride coming together, the Day of the Kazakh Tazy and Tobet is set to become a unique celebration of heritage.
