Kazakhstan’s Aktau Wins ECO Tourism Capital Status for 2030

Kazakhstan's seaside city of Aktau is set to take center stage after being officially designated the tourism capital of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO) for 2030.

The decision was finalized during high-level tourism meetings held from April 27-29 in Shusha, Azerbaijan, where ministers and experts mapped out the future of regional travel, investment, and cross-border tourism routes, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

Aktau stood out as the sole candidate, ticking all the right boxes-from strong infrastructure and safety standards to cultural significance and readiness to host global events. Its growing appeal as a destination on the shores of the Caspian Sea played a decisive role.

Officials highlighted the city’s rapid tourism development, improved transport links, and expanding hospitality sector as key advantages positioning it for international recognition.

The designation is more than symbolic. It’s part of a broader push to strengthen cooperation between member states, attract investment, and promote sustainable tourism practices.

With this status, Aktau is expected to accelerate its transformation into a major travel hub-drawing visitors to Kazakhstan’s western coastline and elevating the region’s global tourism profile.

As preparations begin for 2030, all eyes are now on Aktau to deliver on its promise as one of the Caspian’s rising destinations.
