During an official visit to New York, Askhat Khassenov, Chairman of the Management Board of KazMunayGas company, has met with senior executives from US-based clean technology company LanzaJet to discuss progress on a landmark sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) project in Kazakhstan.
The meeting, which included LanzaJet CEO Jimmy Samartzis and Vice President of Commercial Operations Stefan Tiyon, reviewed the results of a recently completed Feasibility Study for the proposed SAF production facility, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Both parties agreed on next steps and signed a Framework Agreement to formally approve the study’s findings and launch the Front-End Engineering Design (FEED) phase. This phase will develop detailed technical and economic plans for the plant’s construction.
Market forecasts suggest that by 2030, Kazakhstan’s SAF demand could reach up to 70,000 tons annually, highlighting the project’s significant potential.
Khassenov emphasized the strategic importance of the collaboration, stating, “This partnership not only strengthens bilateral ties but also advances our goals for low-carbon development and the integration of innovative technologies. The project will accelerate growth in the biofuels sector, improve aviation’s environmental footprint, and enhance Kazakhstan’s position as a regional transit hub.”
Sustainable Aviation Fuel, produced from renewable, non-petroleum resources, can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by up to 95 per cent when blended with traditional jet fuel.
LanzaJet is a global leader in alcohol-to-jet SAF technology, developed in partnership with the US Department of Energy’s Pacific Northwest National Laboratory. The company maintains long-term supply agreements with major airlines including All Nippon Airways, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic.
