Kazakhstan Stops Unusual Drug Smuggling Attempt at Border

Customs officers in Kazakhstan have detained a foreign citizen who attempted to smuggle narcotics into the country by hiding 114 capsules of opium inside his stomach.

The suspect was arrested at Aktau International Airport after customs officers discovered approximately one kilogram of opium concealed inside his body, The Caspian Post reports via Nur.kz.

Kazakhstan’s National Security Committee said it recently dismantled nine international and two regional drug trafficking channels. Police officers also shut down an illegal drug-growing laboratory and detained 23 Kazakh citizens along with three foreign nationals during the operations.

In a separate case, security officials reported that a Kazakh citizen was detained at the airport in Astana after transporting 12 kilograms of hashish oil from a South Asian country.

According to the committee, law enforcement agencies seized a large quantity of narcotics during the crackdown, including 3.4 kilograms of opium, 9 kilograms of hashish, 11.4 kilograms of synthetic drugs, 18.5 kilograms of hashish oil, 26.4 kilograms of marijuana, 110 grams of cocaine, and 20 tons of poppy straw, as well as more than 150 liters of chemical precursors.
