A severe snowstorm has caused a seven-vehicle pileup on the Astana-Karaganda highway, Kazakhstan, leaving one person dead and another injured.
The accident occurred around 11:00 a.m. (GMT+5) on March 10 near the village of Oshagandy, when blizzard conditions, strong winds, and heavy snowfall reduced visibility to almost zero, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
Preliminary reports indicate that seven vehicles collided at kilometer 147 of the highway. The crash involved a Chevrolet Nexia, Chery Tiggo, Toyota Land Cruiser, a truck, a pickup belonging to KazAutoJol, and a UAZ Hunter.
Authorities said a passenger of the Toyota Land Cruiser died at the scene, while the driver of the UAZ Hunter was hospitalized with injuries.
Police officers, emergency responders, and paramedics are currently working at the scene as investigators determine the exact circumstances of the accident.
The Karaganda Region Police Department has urged drivers to check weather conditions before traveling and follow traffic restrictions, warning that intercity travel during blizzards and poor visibility can pose serious risks to all road users.
