A localized fire has broken out at the municipal solid waste landfill in Kyrgyzstan's capital Bishkek, with officials saying the blaze was likely caused by extreme temperatures that triggered the self-heating and ignition of waste.
Emergency response teams are working at the scene under the coordination of Ulan Sarylbek uulu, head of the city's Pervomaisky District. Specialized municipal services have been deployed and are operating in an enhanced response mode to contain the fire, The Caspian Post reports via 24.kg.
Temperatures in parts of the landfill had reached 60°C (140°F) before the incident, creating conditions that may have caused the waste to ignite spontaneously.
The situation is under control and that crews are taking all necessary measures to localize the fire, prevent it from spreading, and ensure public safety.
No casualties have been reported, and firefighting operations remain ongoing.
