Zalkar Askaraliev, founder of the acclaimed Kyrgyz jewelry brand Zalkar, has proudly represented Kyrgyzstan at the prestigious ALA CRAFT International Crafts Festival held in Kazakhstan's Almaty city.
The event also marked the official ceremony recognizing Almaty as a “World Craft City”, an esteemed global designation awarded by the World Crafts Council, The Caspian Post informs via Kyrgyz media.
The festival, Central Asia’s largest cultural gathering dedicated to craftsmanship, drew over 100 artisans from Kazakhstan, Asia, Europe, Australia, and the US. It celebrated a rich array of artistic traditions, emphasizing the diversity and heritage of global craftsmanship.
Speaking about his participation, Askaraliev shared, “This is my first time at ALA CRAFT as a jewelry artist, and it’s truly an honor. Previously, I showcased my work as a fashion designer, but now I’m excited to present my jewelry art. Almaty has always been close to my heart, and I’m delighted to see it recognized as a city of artisans and jewelers. As your neighbors from Kyrgyzstan, we celebrate this achievement with you.”
Expanding the Global Network of Craft Cities
Aziz Murtazaev, Advisor to the Asia-Pacific Region Board of the World Crafts Council, noted that over 72 cities worldwide have earned the World Craft City title, with more than 45 located in the Asia-Pacific region. Among the first in the post-Soviet space to receive this honor were Kokand, Bukhara, and Margilan in Uzbekistan.
Kyrgyzstan’s Growing Craft Heritage
Kyrgyzstan has made notable progress in preserving its traditional crafts. The Naryn region is recognized for its centuries-old yurt-making tradition, while Issyk-Kul is famed for its shyrdak-a traditional felt rug that holds deep cultural significance.
Askaraliev’s presence at ALA CRAFT not only showcased Kyrgyz craftsmanship on an international stage but also highlighted the nation’s expanding influence in the global crafts and design community.
