The inaugural meeting of the Kyrgyz-Tajik water management commission has been held in Dushanbe, signaling a major step forward in strengthening bilateral cooperation.
According to the Ministry of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry of Kyrgyzstan, the newly formed commission is designed to facilitate sustainable and equitable management of shared water resources, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.
Key areas of focus during the talks included mutual access to water and energy infrastructure, as well as coordinated efforts to prevent and address potential challenges in cross-border water management.
The two sides also discussed attracting investment for the modernization and rehabilitation of vital hydrotechnical facilities located in border regions, recognizing the importance of upgraded infrastructure for long-term regional stability and economic development.
The meeting concluded with both parties agreeing to continue deepening cooperation within the framework of the commission, reaffirming their shared commitment to sustainable development and the peaceful, productive use of natural resources.
This meeting follows a period of significant progress in Kyrgyzstan-Tajikistan relations. In March 2024, the two countries signed a landmark Agreement on the State Border, resumed direct air service on March 14, and announced a target to increase bilateral trade volume to $500 million by 2030.
