Kyrgyzstan to End Electricity Imports by 2028

Deputy Chairman of the Kyrgyz Cabinet of Ministers Bakyt Torobaev has said that Kyrgyzstan aims to stop importing electricity by 2028.

Torobaev made these remarks during a parliamentary session, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

Responding to MP Dastan Bekeshev, who highlighted the difficulties of living with a 3 kW limit, Torobaev confirmed that the country plans to fully generate its own electricity within the next few years.

Deputy Energy Minister Emilbek Ysmanov noted that Kyrgyzstan is set to import 4.3 billion kWh this year, 80 per cent of which has already been delivered. Torobaev added that growing economic demand requires more electricity, and president’s goal is to eliminate the electricity deficit by 2028.

Highlighting ongoing projects, he mentioned the commissioning of a 100-megawatt solar power plant in Kemin, as well as construction of solar and wind plants in Issyk-Kul and hydroelectric facilities in Kazarman, Kokomeren, Suusamyr, and the Kambar-Ata-1 hydroelectric power plant.
