Mass Food Poisoning at Family Celebration Sends Dozens to Hospital in Kyrgyzstan

A suspected case of mass food poisoning has left 49 people seeking medical treatment after a family celebration in the Uzgen district of Kyrgyzstan's Osh region.

The incident occurred following a sunnat toy-a traditional celebration marking a boy's circumcision-held at the Almaz restaurant, where around 280 guests were in attendance, The Caspian Post reports via 24kg.

Health authorities said 49 people later developed symptoms of food poisoning and sought medical care. Seven are being treated as outpatients, while the remaining patients have been hospitalized. Some of those affected were family members who ate leftover food taken home after the event.

Officials suspect that homemade chicken drumsticks brought to the celebration by the host family may have been the source of the outbreak. Other dishes, including salads and hot meals, were reportedly prepared fresh at the restaurant.

Laboratory testing of the suspected food could not be carried out because no leftovers were available for analysis.

The Almaz restaurant has been temporarily closed and fined 23,000 soms while sanitary authorities conduct an epidemiological investigation and implement disease-control measures.

According to the regional sanitary service, this is the first mass food poisoning incident recorded in the Osh region this year. Earlier in 2026, five isolated food poisoning cases involving a total of 11 people were reported.
