Snap Election Appeal Sparks Arrests in Kyrgyzstan

A court in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan has ordered five individuals into pre-trial detention until April 10 after they signed an appeal calling for snap presidential election.

The suspects were previously detained on suspicion of organizing mass unrest, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

The Kyrgyz Interior Ministry stated that the individuals attempted to organize public appeals for snap presidential election and disseminated unverified information among the population.

The appeal was addressed to President Sadyr Japarov and Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh (parliament) Nurlanbek Turgunbek uulu. It was reportedly signed by 75 citizens, including academics, former prime ministers, ex-lawmakers, and public figures.
