4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Türkiye

A magnitude 4.7 earthquake hit off the coast of Demre early in the morning, according to Turkey's disaster authority, with the tremor registered in the eastern Mediterranean.

The earthquake occurred at 8:48 a.m. local time in the Mediterranean Sea, with its epicenter located off the coast of Demre, a district in Antalya province, The Caspian Post reports, citing foreign media.

AFAD confirms magnitude and depth

Türkiye’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) stated via its official website that the earthquake measured 4.7 in magnitude. In earthquake terms, magnitude indicates the energy released at the source, and a 4.7 quake is generally classified as moderate.

The agency also determined that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 16.17 kilometers (approximately 10 miles), a factor that can influence how strongly it is felt on the surface.

According to the report, the epicenter was located approximately 55.47 kilometers (around 34 miles) from Demre.
