NATO Pledges €70 Billion in Military Support for Ukraine

NATO leaders have pledged €70 billion ($80 billion) in military assistance for Ukraine in 2026, reaffirming their long-term commitment to supporting Kyiv as the alliance concluded its two-day summit in Ankara.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy joined leaders from all 32 NATO member states, holding a series of high-level meetings, including talks with US President Donald Trump, as he sought continued international backing for Ukraine, The Caspian Post reports via Al Jazeera.

In a joint declaration issued at the end of the summit, NATO members reaffirmed their "unwavering support" for Ukraine's sovereignty, freedom and territorial integrity.

"For 2026, Allies pledge €70 billion in military equipment, assistance and training for Ukraine and affirm their sovereign commitments to sustaining at least equivalent levels in 2027," the statement said.

The alliance also stressed that long-term military support-now largely provided by European countries and Canada-must remain equitable, predictable and sustainable to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities.

The summit also highlighted a shift in tone from President Trump, who expressed optimism about the prospects for a future peace agreement while acknowledging the challenges of negotiations.

Speaking alongside President Zelenskyy, Trump described Russian President Vladimir Putin as "a difficult character" before adding that the Ukrainian leader is also "a difficult character," reflecting the complexity of efforts to end the war.
