A spill of vegetable oil into the Black Sea has been recorded following Russia’s heavy attacks on the infrastructure of the Yuzhny port in Ukraine’s Odesa region.
The port came under continuous shelling during the first two days after the attack, significantly limiting response efforts, The Caspian Post reports via Ukrainian media.
Cleanup and containment operations could only be carried out partially and strictly during breaks between air raid alerts, in line with safety requirements for personnel.
During this period, specialists gradually installed containment booms to block off sections of the affected water area. Once the security situation stabilized, the booms were fully deployed across the designated zone.
The substance involved was vegetable oil, an organic material that is subject to natural biological decomposition. Nevertheless, Ukraine’s Sea Ports Authority said it is working together with all relevant services to localize the spill and prevent further spread of pollution, taking into account current security risks and weather conditions.
