Russian forces have launched strikes on the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, damaging residential buildings and sparking fires.
Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, has said that the attacks followed warnings of possible airstrikes involving guided aerial bombs. Explosions were reported shortly after the alerts, The Caspian Post reports via Ukrainian media.
“Russian forces struck one of Zaporizhzhia’s districts. Preliminary reports suggest a residential building was damaged,” Fedorov said. Local authorities confirmed at least three enemy strikes hit the city. Emergency services were deployed, and officials are still assessing the full scale of the damage.
The attack ignited fires in garages and vehicles, with flames spreading across parts of the affected area. Initially, no casualties were reported, but an update at 04:50 confirmed that two civilians - a man and a woman - were injured and are receiving medical assistance.
Photos released by the regional administration show damaged buildings and burning vehicles, illustrating the impact of the overnight assault. Zaporizhzhia has been a frequent target of Russian missile, drone, and aerial bomb attacks, with officials regularly issuing warnings as threats intensify, even during public holidays.
Earlier this month, on December 17, airstrikes damaged a high-rise residential building and key infrastructure, and on December 19, Russian strikes during St. Nicholas Day celebrations injured five people, including a child. Authorities continue to urge residents to stay vigilant amid ongoing security threats.
