A regional state of emergency has been declared in nine additional districts of Russia's Dagestan as severe weather continues to impact the region, according to the press service of the head of the republic.
The statement said that, by decree of the head of Dagestan, Sergei Melikov, a state of emergency has been introduced in several municipalities due to adverse weather conditions, The Caspian Post reports, citing Russian media.
The affected districts include Agulsky, Akushinsky, Dakhadaevsky, Kaitagsky, Kulinsky, Magaramkentsky, Babayurtovsky, Kumtorkalinsky, and Novolaksky.
The press service noted that similar emergency measures had previously been declared in a number of other areas, including Makhachkala, Buynaksk, Dagestanskiye Ogni, Kaspiysk, Khasavyurt, as well as Derbentsky, Karabudakhkentsky, and Khasavyurtovsky districts.
Heavy rains that struck the republic on March 28 and again on April 4-5 caused widespread flooding across Dagestan. In response to the scale of the disaster, a federal state of emergency was later declared in the region.
According to the latest data, 9,825 residential buildings have been flooded, while 7,126 homes sustained damage as a result of the disaster.
Rising water levels also led to the flooding of a section of a federal highway in the Derbent District. In addition, a dam breach at the Gedzhukh Reservoir forced the evacuation of more than 4,000 residents from four microdistricts in the Derbent area.
