Russian forces have launched missile and drone strikes on several Ukrainian cities, killing one person and injuring at least two others.
The southern port city of Odesa came under a large-scale drone attack late on February 8 into the early hours of February 9. Local authorities reported damage to residential infrastructure, including a multi-story apartment building and a gas pipeline, The Caspian Post reports via Ukrainian media.
Ukraine’s Air Force said Russian drones approached Odesa around 12:30 a.m. (GMT+2), while residents reported multiple explosions across the city. Emergency services confirmed that a fire broke out in a residential building after the strike, with several cars also catching fire. According to the State Emergency Service, a 35-year-old man was killed, while two people - including a 19-year-old woman - were injured. At least 21 apartments in Odesa’s Prymorskyi district were damaged.
Earlier, Russian forces also targeted Kyiv in what Ukrainian officials described as a ballistic missile attack. Explosions were heard in the capital around 9 p.m. Mayor Vitalii Klitschko said air defense systems were activated, urging residents to remain in shelters. Power outages were reported in at least one district.
While officials have not confirmed specific targets in Kyiv, air raid warnings were lifted later.
The latest strikes come amid Russia’s continued missile and drone campaign against Ukraine’s energy infrastructure. Ukraine’s state grid operator Ukrenergo said the power system remains under severe strain, with some nuclear units temporarily disconnected following a major attack on February 7. In Kyiv, some residents have had electricity for only one to two hours a day, a situation that could worsen as temperatures are expected to drop to minus 19°C in the coming days.
Emergency services continue assessing the damage as recovery efforts remain underway across affected regions.
