Turkish customs officers have seized more than 4.3 tons of narcotic substances during a large-scale anti-smuggling operation at the Ipsala border gate in the province of Edirne, in a major drug bust valued at over $90 million.
The operation led to the confiscation of 4,321 kilograms of illegal substances, with an estimated market value of around 3.025 billion Turkish lira. The entire shipment was destroyed following the seizure, The Caspian Post reports via TRT Haber.
Türkiye’s Ministry of Trade said the operation was carried out as part of ongoing efforts to combat cross-border drug trafficking at the country’s frontier checkpoints.
The investigation began after a freight truck arriving from Greece passed initial inspections and was then directed to a secondary examination area for a detailed search by customs enforcement and intelligence units.
During the thorough inspection, customs officers discovered a large quantity of a substance identified as pregabalin, a controlled pharmaceutical compound often misused in illicit drug trade.
