Azerbaijan’s FC Qarabag has advanced to the UEFA Champions League league phase after a dramatic 5-4 aggregate victory over Hungarian champions Ferencvárosi TC.
The decisive second-leg match took place at Tofig Bahramov Stadium in Baku and delivered plenty of excitement for the home crowd, The Caspian Post reports.
Ferencváros struck first with Lenny Joseph scoring in the 12th minute, putting pressure on the Azerbaijani side.
However, Qarabag responded swiftly. Leandro Andrade equalized in the 25th minute, reigniting the home side's hopes. Just before halftime, Abdellah Zoubir found the net in the 45th minute, giving Qarabag a 2-1 lead going into the break.
In the second half, Ferencváros fought back. Barnabás Varga leveled the match in the 55th minute with a goal from the penalty spot. Then, in the 81st minute, Alex Tóth scored to put Ferencváros ahead in the game.
Despite the loss on the night, Qarabag’s earlier advantage from the first leg was enough to see them through with a 5-4 aggregate score, earning them a coveted place in the UEFA Champions League league phase.
