Iran is working to deepen ties with Tajikistan, emphasizing shared cultural and linguistic heritage as a foundation for broader cooperation.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi made the remarks during a meeting in Tehran with Iran’s Ambassador to Tajikistan, Alireza Haghighian, where they reviewed current bilateral relations and explored opportunities for expanding cooperation across trade, investment, culture, and education, The Caspian Post reports via Tajik media.
“Iran places a high priority on deepening ties with culturally aligned and like-minded nations,” Araghchi said, highlighting the importance of ongoing dialogue to strengthen relations with Dushanbe.
Iran and Tajikistan share long-standing historical and cultural connections. Tehran was the first country to recognize Tajikistan’s independence in 1991 and established an embassy in Dushanbe in 1992. Iran also played a key role in facilitating peace talks in the 1990s, assisting to end Tajikistan’s civil war in 1997.
Bilateral relations peaked during Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s presidency but later cooled due to political disagreements. Relations began improving in 2019, with Tajikistan expressing its intention to restore diplomatic ties and both nations appointing new ambassadors, marking a renewed chapter in cooperation.
Since then, Iran and Tajikistan have steadily rebuilt their partnership, fostering collaboration across multiple sectors and reinforcing their shared cultural and historical bonds.
