World Health Organization Trains Turkmen Virologists to Boost National Response to Flu and Respiratory Threats

The World Health Organization (WHO) country office in Turkmenistan has held a three-day training course to upgrade the skills of virology laboratory specialists from across the country.

The program aimed to strengthen national capacity for the early detection and rapid response to potential influenza outbreaks and other acute respiratory infections (ARIs), The Caspian Post reports via Turkmen media.

The training focused on advanced PCR diagnostic techniques (polymerase chain reaction), a crucial tool for quickly and accurately identifying pathogens-vital for preventing the spread of infectious diseases.

The sessions took place at the Public Health and Nutrition Center in Ashgabat and brought together representatives from sanitary and epidemiological services from Ashgabat, Arkadag, and all provinces (Ahal, Balkan, Dashoguz, Lebap, and Mary).

This initiative is part of WHO’s long-term strategy to support the Government of Turkmenistan in strengthening national laboratory systems, improving surveillance of influenza and respiratory infections, and enhancing the country’s preparedness for pandemic influenza and other viral threats.

The three-day course combined theoretical lessons with hands-on PCR practice, enabling participants to immediately apply new skills in their daily laboratory work.
