Swiss Court Opens High-Profile Trial of Uzbek Ex-President’s Daughter

A major corruption trial is getting underway in Switzerland, where Gulnara Karimova - the eldest daughter of former Uzbek leader Islam Karimov - faces serious charges including money laundering and participation in a criminal organization.

Proceedings have begun at the Federal Criminal Court, with prosecutors alleging that Karimova received billions of dollars in bribes from international telecom companies in exchange for mobile license deals in Uzbekistan, The Caspian Post reports via Russian media.

According to investigators, hundreds of millions of those funds were laundered through Swiss financial channels, including accounts at private banks such as Lombard Odier, as well as shell companies, real estate, and safe deposit boxes.

Swiss authorities say they have already confiscated around 800 million Swiss francs linked to the case, one of the largest asset seizures in the country’s history tied to corruption investigation.

The illegal activity dates back to 2005-2012, during which Karimova is said to have opened more than 30 bank accounts using intermediaries.

The trial is expected to last about a month and marks another chapter in a long-running international corruption scandal that has involved investigations across several European countries.

Karimova has already been convicted in Uzbekistan, where she is currently serving a lengthy prison sentence on multiple charges, including extortion, tax evasion, and embezzlement.
