Uzbek Firms Secure Licenses to Boost Hydrocarbon Exploration in Afghanistan

Uzbekistan’s Minister of Energy Jurabek Mirzamahmudov has said that Uzbek companies officially received licenses to explore and produce hydrocarbons in Afghanistan, marking a major step forward in regional energy cooperation.

Mirzamahmudov confirmed that work has already begun at the Tuti-Maidan gas field, with the project officially launched on September 14, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

The development is being led by Eriell KAM, an Uzbek energy company, in partnership with Uzbekneftegaz and the country’s first deputy minister of energy.

The project is expected to span 25 years, laying the groundwork for deeper energy collaboration between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan.

“This is only the first phase,” Mirzamahmudov said. “Based on the outcomes, we will expand operations and jointly develop new exploration blocks. This initiative is designed to benefit both nations economically.”

Beyond Energy: Afghanistan as a Strategic Transit Hub

The energy minister also highlighted the broader strategic significance of the partnership, pointing to Afghanistan’s geographic role as a potential trade and transport corridor.

“If stability is restored, Afghanistan can serve as Uzbekistan’s shortest route to the oceans,” Mirzamahmudov explained. “This would give us more direct access to international markets and unlock the region’s full economic and logistical potential.”

He stressed that peace in Afghanistan is not only crucial for Uzbekistan but also for the broader region.

“Achieving long-term stability is a political and strategic goal shared by all neighboring countries. Our president is fully committed to this vision. We are already seeing tangible results from our consistent and pragmatic approach,” he added.

Strong Bilateral Ties

Mirzamahmudov also spoke warmly about the positive and respectful relationship between the Uzbek and Afghan peoples, noting the gratitude often expressed by Afghan officials during bilateral meetings.

“They often thank our president for his genuine support of the Afghan people,” the minister said.

He recalled a recent remark by Abdul Ghani Baradar Akhund, Afghanistan’s Acting Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs:

“When I met the President [of Uzbekistan] in Azerbaijan, I saw in his eyes and words a sincere love for Afghanistan and its people.”

A Step Toward Regional Integration

The energy project represents a broader push by Uzbekistan to promote regional integration through economic cooperation and infrastructure development. At a time when Afghanistan’s internal situation remains uncertain, Tashkent’s engagement offers a potential model for constructive international involvement.

By combining energy collaboration with a long-term vision for peace and connectivity, Uzbekistan is positioning itself as a key player in the future of regional development and stability.
