Uzbekistan’s Natural Gas Imports from Turkmenistan and Russia Plunge in H1 2025

The Uzbek National Statistical Committee has announced that Uzbekistan’s natural gas imports from Turkmenistan and Russia declined by 30 per cent during the first half of 2025 compared to the same period last year, totaling $571.8 million.

Imports fluctuated throughout the months, starting at $27.8 million in January, plunging to $8 million in February and further down to $2.7 million in March, The Caspian Post reports, citing Uzbek media.

However, imports recovered strongly in subsequent months, reaching $112 million in April, $135 million in May, and peaking at $286.3 million in June.

On the export side, Uzbekistan’s natural gas shipments to China surged by 50 per cent since the beginning of the year, totaling $354.9 million. Monthly exports were $21.8 million in January, $20.2 million in February, and $52.3 million in March, followed by substantial increases to $105.4 million in April, $88.3 million in May, and $66.9 million in June.

Data from China’s General Administration of Customs show some discrepancies, reporting Uzbekistan’s natural gas exports to China at $365.57 million from January to May 2025 - a 55.5 per cent increase year-over-year.

Chinese customs also recorded a 12.6 per cent decline in monthly exports in June, dropping from $118.78 million in May to $103.72 million. However, on an annual basis, June 2025 exports rose by 27.85 per cent compared to June 2024.
