Uzbekistan’s Nuclear Energy Agency (Uzatom) has announced public hearings scheduled for December 23 to discuss the country’s planned nuclear power plant.
According to Uzatom, the upcoming hearings will feature a detailed presentation of the project’s environmental impact assessment, covering both the construction process and the plant’s long-term operation, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.
The project proposes the installation of Russia-designed VVER-1000 and RITM-200N reactors, with a combined capacity of 2,110 MW. Once operational, the plant is expected to generate 16-17 billion kWh of electricity annually - enough to cover 12-15 per cent of Uzbekistan’s energy needs.
Atomstroyexport, the international engineering branch of Russia’s state-owned Rosatom, has been selected as the general contractor.
The construction phase is projected to create up to 13,000 jobs, while the plant’s operation will provide around 2,000 permanent positions. The facility is expected to operate for at least 60 years.
