Armenia Hopes to Open Borders With Türkiye and Azerbaijan by 2030

Armenia hopes to open its borders and transport links with Türkiye and Azerbaijan by 2030, a move that could transform the South Caucasus into a key transit hub connecting Europe and Central Asia.

Speaking about the country's long-term regional vision, Armenian Deputy Foreign Minister Vahan Kostanyan said Yerevan sees growing opportunities for reopening communications with its neighbors and believes progress could come even sooner than expected, The Caspian Post reports via Report.

“Our vision is that by 2030 we will have open communications and open borders with our two neighbors with whom, unfortunately, the borders remain closed today - Türkiye and Azerbaijan,” Kostanyan said.

The deputy foreign minister said that Armenia and its American partners are completing the legal preparations for the launch of the Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity (TRIPP) project, an initiative that could significantly reshape the transport landscape of the South Caucasus and strengthen links between Europe and Central Asia.

A feasibility study is also being prepared, with a particular focus on the railway component of the project, which is expected to play a key role in future regional connectivity.

Kostanyan noted that Armenia is working closely with the European Union to modernize transport infrastructure, including the construction of new border crossings and upgrades to road networks designed to support growing transit flows.

He emphasized that instability along traditional trade routes and disruptions in global supply chains have increased the strategic importance of the Middle Corridor, creating new economic opportunities for countries across the region.

The Armenian official also pointed to statements from Azerbaijan expressing readiness to allow Armenian cargo to move via rail, as well as recent signals from Türkiye indicating a willingness to permit the transit of Armenian goods through Turkish territory.

Kostanyan said that stronger transport connectivity would not only boost trade but also contribute to long-term stability in the South Caucasus by deepening economic interdependence among regional states.

Armenia is also working to ensure the smooth movement of cargo through its section of the Middle Corridor, a goal that will require further development of digital systems and legal frameworks with support from the European Union.
