Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan says he hopes Armenian citizens will be able to travel to the European Union without visas starting in 2029, as Yerevan continues negotiations on visa liberalization with Brussels.
Speaking alongside European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in Yerevan, Pashinyan said Armenia's goal is to complete the necessary reforms within the next two years, The Caspian Post reports via Iz.ru.
"I have said that our task is to achieve this within two years. I hope that from 2029 it will become possible," the Armenian prime minister said.
Von der Leyen praised Armenia's progress in meeting the EU's visa liberalization requirements, noting that the country is currently the only EU partner actively engaged in this dialogue.
She said the European Commission published an action plan assessment in April and confirmed that a new EU evaluation mission will visit Armenia in the autumn of 2026 to review the country's progress.
"You are on the right track and working hard to meet the requirements," von der Leyen said. "Once all the necessary conditions are fulfilled, we will be able to move to a visa-free regime. When the reforms are completed, you will cross the finish line."
The comments come as Armenia continues to deepen its ties with the European Union while balancing its relationships with regional partners. Earlier this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin warned that Armenia's closer alignment with EU economic standards could affect its participation in the Eurasian Economic Union and alter existing trade and labor arrangements with Russia.
