Central Asian States Agree on Toktogul Reservoir Water Release Schedule

Water and energy coordination across Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan has entered a new phase after officials agreed on a coordinated water release schedule from the Toktogul Reservoir for the coming two months.

The agreement was reached during high-level talks in Tashkent, where heads of water and energy agencies from the three countries met to coordinate regional resource management, The Caspian Post reports via Sputnik Kazakhstan.

Following the negotiations, the sides signed a trilateral protocol defining the volume and timing of water releases from the Toktogul reservoir, a key source for irrigation and hydropower across Central Asia.

Officials emphasized that the priority is securing stable water supply for southern agricultural regions during the peak irrigation season. The coordinated schedule is expected to help farmers plan planting and irrigation activities without disruptions.

The agreement builds on broader seasonal cooperation. From September 2025 to April 2026, Kazakhstan supplied more than 1,560 million kWh of electricity to Kyrgyzstan to support energy balancing during colder months.

The next round of talks is scheduled for mid-June in Bishkek, where the countries are expected to finalize water and energy allocations for July, August, and September.
