CIS Talks in Moscow to Focus on Security Risks Near Central Asia’s Borders

A high-level meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) will take place in Moscow, Russia, on April 17, bringing together representatives from nine countries, including foreign ministers from across the region.

The session will be attended by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who is also expected to hold separate talks with the foreign ministers of Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan, The Caspian Post reports via Uzbek media.

Key discussions are expected to focus on strengthening regional cooperation and implementing agreements reached during the “Central Asia - Russia” summit held in Dushanbe in October 2025.

Foreign ministers will also address regional security challenges, including risks linked to instability near Central Asia’s borders and threats posed by international terrorist groups.

The agenda further includes a review of cooperation results for 2025, expansion of integration ties, and preparation of decisions to be submitted to heads of state.

Another topic on the table is internal changes within the CIS, as Moldova has announced plans to withdraw from the organization by 2027, which may also be discussed during the meeting.
