Georgia and Türkiye have agreed to launch a new barter-based electricity exchange mechanism aimed at improving seasonal energy management and strengthening regional energy cooperation.
The new arrangement will allow Georgia to export electricity to Türkiye during the spring and summer months, when hydroelectric power generation is high due to seasonal flooding and increased river flows, The Caspian Post reports via BM.ge.
In return, Türkiye will supply Georgia with the same volume of electricity during the autumn season, when domestic energy shortages typically increase.
The mechanism is expected to help Georgia better manage excess electricity generated by hydropower plants during peak production periods while ensuring more stable energy supplies later in the year.
The barter system will not apply to power stations operating under guaranteed purchase contracts or price-difference agreements if they have existing obligations to the market operator during the specified period.
