Australia has confirmed that its long-standing Middle East military headquarters was targeted in an Iranian drone attack, heightening concerns over the widening regional conflict.
Defense Minister Richard Marles said the Al Minhad Air Base - located about 24 kilometers south of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates - was hit over the weekend, The Caspian Post reports via Israeli media.
“There were some drones which did attack that base on the first night,” Marles said, confirming earlier media reports. He added that all Australian personnel stationed at the facility are safe and accounted for.
Australia has operated out of Al Minhad since 2003, using it as the primary hub for its military operations across the Middle East. At any given time, up to 80 Australian personnel are stationed at the base, according to the military.
The strike comes as regional airspace closures continue to disrupt travel. Canberra says around 115,000 Australian nationals remain in the Middle East and are currently unable to leave due to flight suspensions linked to the escalating conflict.
