Iran launched hundreds of drone strikes over the weekend targeting Arab states in the Persian Gulf, damaging U.S. bases, critical infrastructure, and putting regional air defense systems under strain.
Tehran appears to be using tactics similar to those deployed by Russia in Ukraine - focusing on key infrastructure to exert psychological pressure on civilian populations while inflicting economic damage, The Caspian Post reports via foreign media.
Infrastructure in the Crosshairs
Iran’s strike drones are small, difficult to intercept, and relatively inexpensive to produce. While they cause less physical destruction than large missile systems, they are highly effective against civilian airports, seaports, and other strategically important facilities.
In several cases, Iran reportedly launched large swarms of drones or combined drone-and-missile attacks to overwhelm and suppress the air defense systems of targeted countries.
Mass Production as a Strategic Edge
Former Israeli military intelligence officer Danny Citrinowicz said that the main advantage of Iran’s approach lies in scale and simplicity.
“Their key advantage is that mass production is relatively simple and effective, and launches can be carried out from both sea and land,” he said.
The strategy mirrors patterns seen in Russia’s campaign against Ukraine, where repeated strikes on energy grids and urban infrastructure have aimed to weaken morale and disrupt daily life.
