AliExpress, ChatGPT Face Additional Tax in Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan’s State Revenue Committee (SRC) has reported the results of an audit targeting foreign digital platforms, which led to more than 2.4 billion tenge (approximately $4.9 million) in additional tax payments being transferred to the national budget.

According to the SRC, ChatGPT and AliExpress were among the companies identified as having made additional tax payments following the audit, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

The committee stated that ChatGPT paid around 1.8 billion tenge, while AliExpress contributed more than 600 million tenge. In total, 77 foreign online platforms were found to have partially failed to meet their tax obligations during a desk audit.

Officials noted that companies are being informed of discrepancies and are required to register where necessary, as well as being provided with guidance on compliance with Kazakhstan’s digital services tax regulations.

Since the introduction of the digital services tax in 2022, a total of 131 foreign internet companies have been registered in Kazakhstan. The SRC also reported that cumulative budget revenues from the tax have reached 171 billion tenge during this period.
