Firefighters in Kazakhstan's capital Astana are continuing round-the-clock efforts to extinguish a major fire at a municipal solid waste landfill, with emergency crews battling the blaze for a third consecutive day.
The fire broke out during the night of July 10 at the landfill located in the city's Baikonyr District, The Caspian Post reports via zakon.kz.
To improve firefighting operations, authorities have divided the site into two operational sectors, concentrating personnel and equipment on the most active areas of the fire.
Emergency crews are also carrying out engineering work by covering the landfill with inert material to isolate burning hotspots and prevent the fire from spreading further.
The Ministry of Emergency Situations said that approximately 14,850 tons of inert material have already been transported to the site as part of the containment effort.
Firefighters remain on the scene as operations continue to fully extinguish the blaze and prevent reignition.
