Yasutoshi Nishimura, Secretary-General of the League and Deputy Chairman of Japan’s LDP Election Committee, has emphasized Kazakhstan’s strategic importance in Japan’s foreign policy and the growth of economic and humanitarian ties.
In an interview with Jibek Joly TV, Nishimura noted that while Central Asia is of broad interest to Japan, Kazakhstan stands out due to its geographical location, political stability, and resource potential, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
He highlighted that Japan imports oil, uranium, and now critical minerals from Kazakhstan, and sees strong potential for further mutually beneficial partnerships fueled by population growth, foreign students, and sustainable economic development.
Nishimura praised Kazakhstan’s participation in the Osaka Expo, which attracted over a million visitors to the Kazakh pavilion, and noted plans for direct air services to expand cultural and educational exchanges. He also pointed to growing Japanese investment interest in Kazakhstan not only in business, but in culture, sports, and “soft power” initiatives, citing the popularity of wrestling and recognition of Kazakh boxer Gennady Golovkin in Japan.
Ahead of the Central Asia-Japan Summit, Nishimura expressed hope that the meeting would strengthen regional dialogue and further deepen ties. In a separate interview, Japan’s Ambassador to Kazakhstan, Yasumasa Iijima, discussed the future of bilateral cooperation, the Middle Corridor development, environmental issues in the Caspian, and joint efforts in nuclear disarmament.
