Preliminary results from Kazakhstan’s nationwide referendum show strong support for the country’s new constitution.
According to the Central Referendum Commission of Kazakhstan, 9,127,192 citizens participated in the vote, both domestically and abroad, representing 73.12 per cent of eligible voters. Of those, 7,954,667 people-or 87.15 per cent-voted in favor of adopting the new constitution, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.
With turnout exceeding 50 per cent of eligible voters, the referendum is officially considered valid. 898,099 citizens voted against the proposal, and 146,558 ballots were declared invalid.
The commission is required by law to finalize and announce official results within seven days of the vote.
