Kazakhstan Invites Cyprus to Join Middle Corridor

Kazakhstan has invited Cyprus to participate in the development of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, also known as the Middle Corridor, as the two countries move to deepen economic and investment cooperation.

The proposal was made during talks between President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev and Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, who held extensive discussions on expanding bilateral relations and unlocking new opportunities for business collaboration, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.

The leaders focused on increasing trade, attracting investment, and strengthening ties between the business communities of both countries. To support these goals, President Tokayev proposed the creation of a comprehensive economic cooperation roadmap, the establishment of an intergovernmental commission, and the formation of a bilateral business council.

Tokayev noted that these mechanisms would help accelerate joint projects, boost trade turnover, and create new avenues for economic partnership.

The Kazakh president identified logistics, finance, tourism, and digital technologies as priority areas for future cooperation. Both governments are expected to develop concrete measures aimed at advancing collaboration across these sectors.

A key highlight of the talks was Kazakhstan’s invitation for Cyprus to join the Trans-Caspian Corridor project. Tokayev emphasized Cyprus’ strategic importance as a major maritime hub and noted that the country could play an important role in strengthening trade routes linking Europe and Asia.

He said the Middle Corridor offers significant opportunities to combine Kazakhstan’s land-based transport infrastructure with Cyprus’ maritime capabilities, helping to create a modern, multi-directional logistics network connecting Central Asia, the Caspian region, and the Mediterranean.

Such cooperation could enhance regional connectivity, facilitate faster cargo movement, and contribute to growing trade flows between the two countries and beyond.

The discussions come as Kazakhstan and Cyprus signed five new agreements covering digitalization, culture, education, sports, and trade and investment cooperation, signaling a new phase in bilateral relations.
