Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan Strike New Hydropower Deal to Support Winter Energy and Summer Irrigation

Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan have reached a crucial agreement on hydroelectric cooperation and mutual support.

The deal was finalized during a meeting of water and energy officials from all three countries in Almaty, chaired by Erlan Akkenzhenov of Kazakhstan. The talks focused on stabilizing the regional energy system amid the challenging situation at Kyrgyzstan’s Toktogul reservoir, The Caspian Post informs via Kyrgyz media.

Under the agreement, Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan will provide electricity to Kyrgyzstan this winter, helping the country reduce power generation and conserve water in Toktogul. The stored water will then be released during the 2026 growing season to ensure reliable irrigation for Kazakhstan’s and Uzbekistan’s southern regions.

The parties also committed to coordinated energy-saving measures across Central Asia to ease pressure on the system.

A trilateral protocol was signed to legally formalize winter electricity volumes and water accumulation targets, marking a significant step toward stronger regional energy security.
