Kazakhstan and Macau have strengthened legal and judicial cooperation with the signing of three key intergovernmental agreements covering extradition, mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, and the transfer of convicted persons.
The agreements were signed during a working visit to Macau by Kazakhstan’s Prosecutor General Berik Assylov, alongside Macau’s Secretary for Administration and Justice Wong Sio Chak, marking a significant step in expanding cross-border legal collaboration, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.
The extradition agreement establishes a formal legal framework for transferring fugitives who have committed crimes in one jurisdiction and are seeking refuge in the other.
The mutual legal assistance deal provides a basis for cooperation between law enforcement agencies of Kazakhstan and Macau, enabling joint investigative actions, evidence gathering, and measures to freeze and confiscate criminal assets.
A third agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons will allow individuals convicted abroad to serve their prison sentences in their home country, improving humanitarian and legal coordination between the two sides.
During the visit, Assylov also met with Macau Prosecutor General Tong Hio Fong to discuss broader issues of international security, combating transnational crime, protecting investments, and recovering illegally obtained assets.
Both sides agreed to deepen cooperation further, enhance the exchange of operational information, and expand collaboration on legal and law enforcement matters of mutual interest.
