Kazakhstan’s Primary Energy Consumption Sees Modest Rise

Kazakhstan’s primary energy consumption reached 74.3 million tons of oil equivalent (toe) in 2024, marking a slight increase of 0.1 per cent compared to the previous year.

Coal remained the dominant energy source, accounting for 47.2 per cent of total primary energy use, followed by natural gas at 33.1 per cent, and crude oil and oil products at 17.4 per cent, The Caspian Post reports per Kazakh media.

Final energy consumption grew more noticeably, rising 2.9 per cent to 44.65 million toe in 2024. The residential sector was the largest consumer, responsible for 36.5 per cent (16.3 million toe) of final energy use, followed by the transport sector with 11.1 million toe and manufacturing at 9.9 million toe.

The report detailed the composition of final energy consumption by type: heat accounted for 16.9 per cent, electricity for 16.4 per cent, and coal for 12.7 per cent. Energy intensity-defined as energy use per unit of GDP-stood at 0.3 toe per USD in 2024, reflecting a 6.3 per cent reduction since 2015, signaling improved energy efficiency.

Renewable energy sources, excluding hydropower, represented 6.2 per cent of Kazakhstan’s total electricity generation in 2024, continuing a steady growth trend, the Bureau added.
