Deputy Director General for Production at KMG-Karachaganak Andrey Kan has said that Kazakhstan produced about 59 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas in 2024 and plans to ramp up output to around 74 bcm by 2030.
He made these remarks at the SPE 2025 Caspian Technical Conference in Baku, Azerbaijan, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.
Kan highlighted that Kazakhstan holds 3.8 trillion cubic meters of natural gas reserves, with nearly 19 per cent concentrated in major western fields - Tengiz, Kashagan, and Karachaganak. These globally significant oil and gas condensate fields form the core of the country's energy sector.
He noted that their development requires advanced technologies and long-term capital investments due to high-pressure environments, complex multiphase systems, and the presence of H₂S and CO₂.
Looking ahead, Kazakhstan aims to boost gas production to 74 bcm by 2030, though Kan noted that almost half of all gas extracted is reinjected to maintain reservoir pressure. Meeting the target will require new field development, expanded processing facilities, and improved gas recovery technologies.
A major challenge remains geography: the country’s biggest gas reserves lie in the west, while major consumers - including Almaty, Shymkent, and key industrial hubs - are located up to 2,000 km away, driving up both operational and economic complexity.
Earlier, KazMunayGas and Uzbekneftegaz signed an agreement on the Zharkyn project, further strengthening regional energy cooperation.
