Kazakhstan Unveils Modern Border Crossings with China, Uzbekistan

Kazakhstan has inaugurated four upgraded border checkpoints along its borders with China and Uzbekistan in a significant move to enhance its role as a key transit hub in Eurasia.

The development is part of a nationwide initiative to expand trade capacity and streamline customs operations, The Caspian Post reports, citing Kazakh media.

According to the State Revenue Committee under the Ministry of Finance, the modernization project aims to overhaul nine major checkpoints along Kazakhstan’s borders with China, Uzbekistan, and Turkmenistan. The newly unveiled checkpoints-Kalzhat and Alakol (on the Chinese border), and Kaplanbek and Atameken (on the Uzbek border)-have been equipped with cutting-edge infrastructure that meets international standards.

Each facility now features high-tech cargo scanners, automated inspection systems, and digital cargo measurement tools. These upgrades have expanded the number of traffic lanes from two to six and reduced average clearance times to just 30 minutes through fully automated procedures.

A key improvement includes the implementation of a “one-stop shop” system, enabling all border and customs controls to be conducted in a single location. Drivers no longer need to exit their vehicles during inspections, significantly speeding up the process.

The modernization also includes the digitalization of customs documentation and enhancements to overall border service efficiency. According to the committee, the remaining five checkpoints under the project are on track to be completed by the end of 2025, further strengthening Kazakhstan’s position in regional logistics and trade connectivity.
