Kyrgyzstan Proposes Land Swap With Kazakhstan to Advance Major Highway Project

Kyrgyzstan has proposed exchanging small sections of border territory with Kazakhstan to facilitate the construction of a new toll highway linking Bishkek to the city of Kemin, a project aimed at improving national transport connectivity.

Kyrgyz presidential spokesman Askat Alagozov said that the proposal involves a border section of approximately 800 meters near the city of Tokmok, The Caspian Post reports via Kaktus.media.

The planned toll road is expected to run from Alma-Atinskaya Street in Bishkek to Kemin, covering a total distance of around 150 kilometers.

The project is designed to modernize transport infrastructure, reduce travel times, and strengthen logistics links across the country.

Discussions concerning border territories should be approached carefully and pragmatically.

The spokesman noted that issues involving border areas are sensitive and should not become a subject of political speculation, stressing that the primary objective is to support infrastructure development and improve transportation networks.

If approved, the proposed land exchange could help accelerate one of Kyrgyzstan’s most significant transport projects, while also highlighting ongoing cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan on regional connectivity and infrastructure development.
