Light Rail Transit Makes First Move in Kazakhstan's Astana Soon

Mayor of Kazakhstan's Astana city Zhenis Kassymbek has announced that Astana is poised to begin initial test operations of its long-awaited Light Rail Transit (LRT) system, with the first train expected to roll out as early as September 29 or 30.

Speaking on the sidelines of a session in the Majilis, Kassymbek outlined the phased launch plan, The Caspian Post informs via Kazakh media.

“We plan to launch the first train from the station near Abu Dhabi Plaza toward the Mangilik Yel bridge,” he said. “Afterward, we will gradually expand operating hours, the number of stations in use, and the train frequency.”

The initial testing phase will run between one or two stations over the next three to six months. In October, the city expects delivery of eight additional trains, bringing the total fleet to 18 by December.

“We aim to have the full fleet in test operation by late December through mid-January, with full service beginning at the start of the new year,” the mayor added.

He also noted a tentative fare of 200 tenge for passengers.

Originally, the LRT’s full construction and commissioning were scheduled for completion by the end of 2025. This early rollout signals a major step forward in the gradual launch of Astana’s urban transit system.
