Official: Kazakh Uranium Reserves May Exceed 2 Million Tons

Kazakh Energy Vice Minister Yerlan Akbarov has said that Kazakhstan may hold over 2 million tons of uranium.

Akbarov made these remarks during a plenary session of the Senate, The Caspian Post reports via Kazakh media.

The country has nine uranium provinces, including hydrogenic deposits in the Shu-Sarysu and Syrdarya basins, while the rest contain solid ore.

The Senate discussed amendments to the Subsoil Code to improve regulation of hydrocarbons and uranium, attract investment, and protect state interests in the sector. The Majilis has already approved the draft law on subsurface use for hydrocarbons and uranium.
