Eight tourists who lost their way in the mountains above Almaty, Kazakhstan, were safely rescued after getting disoriented in the dark and unable to descend toward the Shymbulak resort.
The group of hikers sent a distress call to Kazakhstan’s 112 emergency service after losing their route in the Medeu district, above the popular Shymbulak ski resort, The Caspian Post reports via Kazinform.
Rescuers were able to maintain contact with the tourists and determine their location using geolocation data.
Search-and-rescue teams from Almaty’s emergency services were deployed to the area and initially located three hikers, escorting them toward safety. During the operation, rescuers discovered another group of five tourists who had also become lost in low-visibility conditions.
All eight individuals were safely guided down to the parking area of the Shymbulak mountain resort. No injuries were reported, and none of the tourists required medical assistance.
