As Kyrgyzstan seeks to expand its international partnerships and strengthen ties with Europe, high-level talks in Bishkek have opened a new chapter in relations with Cyprus.
Kyrgyz Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev held talks with Cypriot Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, who arrived in Kyrgyzstan on his first official visit to the country, The Caspian Post reports via the Kyrgyz Foreign Ministry.
The meeting focused on boosting cooperation in key areas ranging from trade and investment to education, culture, and humanitarian exchanges, underscoring both countries' interest in deepening bilateral engagement.
Kulubaev welcomed the current level of relations between the two countries and expressed Kyrgyzstan’s readiness to strengthen collaboration further. Given the strong tourism potential of both nations, the ministers also highlighted mutual interest in sharing expertise and developing joint tourism initiatives.
The talks also touched on Kyrgyzstan’s election to the United Nations Security Council for the 2027-2028 period. Kombos congratulated Kyrgyzstan on securing a seat on the council and wished the country success in its upcoming role. The Kyrgyz side outlined its key priorities for its tenure on the UN’s most influential body.
A significant part of the discussions focused on relations between Kyrgyzstan and the European Union, particularly in the context of Cyprus’ presidency of the EU during the first half of 2026.
Kyrgyzstan praised the European Union’s support for the country’s socio-economic reforms, democratic development, human capital initiatives, and sustainable development programs.
At the same time, Kulubaev raised concerns over the EU’s expanding sanctions policy, warning that unilateral restrictive measures could negatively affect Kyrgyzstan’s trade, economic growth, and financial development. He emphasized Kyrgyzstan’s support for open dialogue and its opposition to the politicization of international economic and commercial relations.
Both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to maintaining active political dialogue and practical cooperation, both bilaterally and through Kyrgyzstan’s partnership with the European Union.
Following the talks, the two sides signed a Cooperation Program between the foreign ministries of Kyrgyzstan and Cyprus for 2027-2028, creating a roadmap for future diplomatic engagement and collaboration.
