Heavy Rains Prompt Urgent Civil Defense Summit in Kyrgyzstan’s Issyk-Kul Region

An urgent civil defense meeting has been convened in Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan, led by Daniyar Arpachiev, First Deputy Presidential Envoy, and Colonel Mirlan Karabaev of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, in response to heavy rains that have occurred and are forecasted through July 11.

Officials assessed the current situation and evaluated the preparedness of emergency services to manage potential natural disasters, The Caspian Post reports via Kyrgyz media.

During the meeting, reports detailed the impacts of recent mudflows in the districts. Authorities identified several shortcomings in the response efforts of some agencies. Colonel Karabaev criticized certain districts for limiting their actions to formal reports without implementing effective preventive measures, despite warnings about mudslide risks.

He also highlighted that weather forecasts have achieved 95 per cent accuracy, emphasizing the necessity for all emergency units to rigorously follow established protocols upon receiving alerts.

Arpachiev warned that strict disciplinary actions will be taken against local officials who fail to meet their responsibilities, underscoring that negligence in such critical situations is unacceptable and must not recur.

Following the meeting, the emergency headquarters decided to launch inspections in the coming days, with a special commission tasked to oversee the enforcement of safety measures and protocol compliance across the region.
