Kyrgyzstan is moving closer to changing the date of its next presidential election, with voters potentially heading to the polls on January 27, 2027.
The country's parliament, the Jogorku Kenesh, has approved in its third reading a draft law introducing amendments to the constitutional legislation governing presidential and parliamentary elections, The Caspian Post reports via vesti.kg.
Under current rules, presidential elections are held on the last Sunday of January, which would have set the next vote for January 31, 2027. However, the newly approved amendments propose moving election day to the last Wednesday of January, making January 27 the likely date for the next presidential race.
Lawmakers say the change is aimed at increasing voter turnout and improving participation in the electoral process.
The legislation now awaits the signature of President Sadyr Japarov before it can take effect.
